With delay in setup of transfer stations for temporary deposition of waste, garbage dumps along the city roads is continuously creating nuisance for the residents. Even, the garbage lying on the roads is also not being lifted timely.
In 2011, the civic body signed an agreement with A2Z, a private firm, for garbage lifting. The firm was supposed to setup the transfer stations in all zones of the municipal corporation (MC) by the end of 2012.
In January, the MC directed the firm to submit a design of the transfer station within a week, but designs have not been submitted till now.
Under this project, small vehicles would unload the waste into larger vehicles, which would transport the waste to the end point of disposal situated near Tajpur Road.
Currently, the dumps on Rani Jhansi Road, near canal bridge of Dugri and Pakhowal Road, Aggar Nagar, near Aarti Chowk on Ferozepur road, various places at National Highway 1 and other places are creating troubles for public. A city resident Arvind Sharma said the transfer stations should be setup at the earliest as garbage lying along the roads would cause outbreak of many diseases.
“The garbage is not even lifted timely from the dump near canal bridges on Pakhowal Road these days,” he added. Joint commissioner and chief of health and sanitation wing Amarjit Singh Sekhon admitted that the project got delayed. He added, “Land was identified in the different zones for the transfer station. However, the designs for these stations have not been submitted by the A2Z group yet.”
Sources also said that the MC had also delayed to identify the lands for this purpose.
When contacted, vice-president of A2Z BPS Chauhan, he said the design for the transfer stations would be handed over soon, following which the process to setup transfer station will be started. “We are also waiting for the grant to setup this project,” he added.
