From the new academic session starting April this year, the Panjab University (PU) students who are into sports will be given Rs 100 a day as refreshment charges during their campus coaching camps and their dearness allowance (DA) has also been enhanced from Rs 190 to Rs 300 per day during outstation inter-college tournaments (outside Chandigarh).

These were a few recommendations of vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Grover as per the decision of the amalgamated fun committee dated December 2015. The recommendations were put forth at a finance board meeting, wherein the members had unanimously decided to recommend them to the syndicate.

Syndicate member and dean students welfare (DSW) professor Navdeep Goyal said the syndicate has approved the provisions recommended in the meeting.

Besides the provision of the refreshment charges and enhancing the DA of the players, the PU syndicate has approved the enhancement of honorarium rates to external coaches from Rs 150 to Rs 500 per day during coaching camps. A provision of enhancing the salary of fitness trainer (for sports quota students) from Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 per month for out of campus sports, budget head salary, has also been approved.

Meanwhile, the salary of the life saver will also be enhanced from Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per month for out of the campus sports. Also, the provision of salary of cricket coaches has also been enhanced from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per month.

However, senator Raghbir Dyal had enquired why only the salary of cricket coach has been enhanced, and that why other coaches have been excluded. He had also sought a list of all the coaches.

Meanwhile, professor Navdeep Goyal had stated that the executive committee of the sports would consider the cases of other coaches and the decision would be taken accordingly. Professor Goyal said, “The syndicate meeting has approved all these provisions and from the new academic session, the players of our varsity and trainers will be entitled for all these benefits.”

Also, senate member Anu Chatrath had suggested that since the university has spent huge amount on allweather swimming pool, a permanent life-saver should be appointed.
