With the monsoon round the corner, the municipal corporation (MC) has set up its flood control room to tackle any emergency situation in the city. Officials of MC’s operations and maintenance wing have been appointed to keep vigil on the high-risk areas where waterlogging is a major problem during rainy days.

The MC’s flood control room has been set up in the Daresi Ground area. Residents can call MC helpline 0161-2749120 in case of any flood like situation. This control room will be functional round the clock from July 1 till September 15.
MC commissioner GK Singh Dhaliwal said the teams have also been formed to ensure cleanliness in the slum areas before the arrival of monsoon in Ludhiana. He said they have started the cleaning of gullies and drains to avoid waterlogging. Each zonal commissioner has been directed to keep a check on high-risk areas.
Dhaliwal said additional commissioner Ghanshyam Thori has been appointed nodal officer for flood control. He said the staff of the O&M cell and others have been given instructions to ensure all arrangements before monsoon. However, there is no panic like situation in the city, he added.
Besides, the MC has also deployed necessary machinery at various zones, said MC additional commissioner Ghanshyam Thori. He said the MC has four JCB machines, seven tippers, five four-wheelers (Tata 407), 23 tractors, seven de-silt machines, 36 water tanks, four jetting machines and other required machines for flood control.
The MC commissioner also inspected cleaning work of Buddha Nullah on Monday and gave instructions to the officials concerned to complete the remaining work by June 28. Dhaliwal said the officials concerned will get only emergency leave during this period.
According to the MC officials, rain water gets accumulated in low lying areas, which lack storm sewerage in the city. Currently, the storm sewerage is available in only around 11 % area of city.
