As Ludhiana is to be developed as smart city, the municipal corporation (MC) has launched cleanliness campaigns in all four zones. The cleanliness drives will be conducted in all the 75 wards from September 1-30.

According to the claims of the MC, the teams will conduct the cleanliness drive at least in one ward of each zone daily. Besides, ensuring proper lifting of garbage from all the dumps, the MC would also clean the vacant plots, which have been filled with garbage.
It was learnt that many of the vacant plots have become nuisance in residential areas as such plots are turning into dumps. The MC would also lift debris or waste material lying on roads or public property in various areas.
MC commissioner GK Singh Dhaliwal said the aim of cleanliness drive is to make city clean and beautiful. "We are focusing on sensitive areas on priority basis as there is much need of cleanliness there. We also want from people to support the MC to keep their surroundings neat and clean," he added.
He also appealed to residents to plant trees to make city green. He also told that they would soon introduce mechanical sweeping for proper cleaning of major roads and refuse compactor system for solid waste operations in various areas, including Dhandari and others.
Chief of health and sanitation wing of the MC Amarjit Singh Sekhon said they will also ensure cutting of wild grass and congress grass in all the areas.
Meanwhile, mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria along with MC officials planted the saplings near the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar at Jalandhar bypass from where the MC launched the cleanliness drive in Zone A. He said the entire city would be cleaned in a phased manner and on the completion of this drive; our city would be much cleaner.
He said to make sure this drive is carried out effectively, zone wise and ward wise competition would be started, wherein the MC officials would check all 75 municipal wards and four zones to choose the cleanest of them. He said the officials responsible for cleanliness of the cleanest zone and cleanest ward would be given appreciation letters and cash awards.
It is worth mentioning that the MC's previous cleanliness drive had remained unsuccessful this year as the claims of authorities did not meet reality.
