Hundreds of class four employees of the municipal corporation (MC) have not been given uniforms for the last five years but now they have been directed to be in uniforms during working hours. This direction has forced them to buy uniforms from their own pocket.

Hundreds of class four employees of the municipal corporation (MC) have not been given uniforms for the last five years but now they have been directed to be in uniforms during working hours. This direction has forced them to buy uniforms from their own pocket.

According to the employees, the MC has to give three uniforms for summer and one for winter after every three years.
Most of the employees are seen not wearing the uniforms these days as they claim that they have no uniform. The visitors also face trouble while finding the rooms of the officials as they can't recognise the class four employees outside the offices as many of them don't wear uniforms.

An employee said, “I have started wearing uniform recently as the higher authorities gave such a direction. I paid from my own pocket to purchase new dress as the old dress that was given around five or six years ago is not worth wearing.”

“We appeal to the authorities to provide us new uniforms and also issue payments for the stitching as per market rate,” he said.

It has been learnt that there are around 4,500 employees including peons, sweepers and others who have not got the uniforms.

Another employee claimed that the sample of previous uniforms was different but the cloth of uniforms which were given to them was not of good quality. He said that only good quality clothes should be provided to them. “According to norms, the MC had to provide new uniforms three years back but nothing has been done. We want MC commissioner to enquire the matter that why the uniforms were not provided,” he added.

Last year, a senior official had also raised question over the distribution of the uniforms as a scam was also suspected in it but the officials concerned had denied about it.

MC commissioner GK Singh Dhaliwal said, “The uniforms will be provided to all the class four employees at the earliest. I have given directions to the staff concerned to take required steps.”
He further said that an NGO has also distributed some uniforms to the sweepers recently.

The issue

MC employees have not been given uniforms for over five years.

Department recently directed the employees to wear uniforms, forcing them to purchase it on their own.

According to employees, MC has to give uniforms after every three years to the staff members.

MC commissioner says uniforms will be provided to the staff members at the earliest.

Apart from uniforms, employees also seek money for getting these stitched.
