Gynaecological problems a reason for abandoning cows

Out of the large number of stray cows seen wandering on the roads, many are suffering from gynaecological problems, as per the claims of veterinary experts. Majority of the cows are abandoned when they stop producing milk.

Dr Madhumeet Singh, professor at Palampur veterinary college, who presented his research papers during the national conference of the society of veterinary and animal husbandry extension held recently at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), informed that around 55% stray cows are suffering from gynaecological problems.

Dr Singh, who conducted his study in Himachal Pradesh, revealed that in rural areas due to absence of doctors, people usually get their cattle treated from inexperienced people like quacks, who are responsible for damaging the reproductive system of cows. His study revealed that farmers abandoned cows mostly due to some problem in their reproductive system. “Even artificial insemination is a technical process and should be done by a veterinary doctor,” he said.

“These stray cattle become cause of dreadful accidents,” said Dr Darshan Singh Kheri, a veterinary officer at Dehlon.

The municipal corporation (MC) has so far failed to conduct any survey to count the actual number of stray cattle. However, the residents wanted registeration of cows and bulls, so that the owners can face music if they abandon them on roads.
