Garbage heaps giving tough time to residents, as well as commuters

Questions are being raised over the working of the municipal corporation in view of the heaps of garbage along the roads.

Commuters are a harried lot due to the foul smell amanating from garbage heaps at the Dugri Road Canal Bridge light point.

Also the vehicles of A2Z group (the company responsible for lifting g arbage), allegedly unload the garbage outside the earmarked dumps.

Interestingly, the dump remains empty as most of the garbage is heaped up to 50 metres from the dump. The unhygienic conditions are posing a threat of outbreak of diseases. One can’t stand up to 100 metres from garbage dumps.

During a visit to the city areas, a vehicle of A2Z was see unloading the garbage around 30 metres away from the dump. The complaints of residents regarding unhygienic conditions are falling on deaf ears.

“The dump was constructed here so that the garbage does not get strewn. It is difficult to stand and breathe here whenever I halt my vehicle at traffic lights. MC is responsible for the situation as the garbage is not being lifted timely. Sometimes, the garbage is lifted only after 3-4 days,” claimed Manjeet Singh Mehram, a resident of Dugri.

Another resident, Harsimran Singh, a resident of Model Town’s D Block, said, “The MC should ensure lifting of garbage twice in a day especially during rainy days. The heaps are open invitation to mosquitoes, flies and stray animals. We are suffering a lot.”

When contacted, chief of health and sanitation wing, Amarjeet Singh Sekhon, said that they would ensure lifting of garbage twice a day throughout the week.

He said that they have already directed to lift garbage twice a day.
