Garbage, garbage everywhere not a way so clean to cross

Finally putting its foot down regarding the poor garbage collection system in the city, the municipal corporation (MC) has issued a notice to the A2Z group to terminate its services.

The company has been given a month to cease its operations.
The MC in the past served several notices on the firm following hordes of complaints from residents. Yet the company failed to ensure proper lifting of garbage.
Among the residents’ various complaints was the grouse that garbage was not being lifted on time from various dumps, leading to stench and unsanitary conditions.
Some Congress and BJP councillors had also filed written complaints with the local bodies department regarding this.
Confirming the development, MC commissioner GK Singh Dhaliwal said notice of termination of services had been issued on A2Z group two days ago. “We were not satisfied with the services of A2Z that failed to bring improvement in its operations despite warnings.”
It was in 2011 when the MC had signed an agreement with the A2Z group to lift garbage from various wards of the city. The firm had also started lifting garbage from houses in some wards.
The company was also supposed to setup transfer stations (processing sites for temporary deposition of waste) in city as per the agreement. Under the process of transfer stations, smaller vehicles would unload waste into large vehicles. But the project did not take off even four years later.
The MC had also planned to segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable garbage from houses in 2014, following which A2Z had started distributing coloured bins among houses. But the project is still hanging fire. Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria had also raised questions on the bins’ quality.
Besides, MC’s solid waste management project is also hanging in balance.
Talking to HT, Dhaliwal said the MC would take over the garbage lifting operations till the next decision was taken.
According to sources, MC is planning to purchase new machinery for lifting garbage using central government grants.
On the other hand, A2Z group has accused MC of not providing required sources and funds for proper implementation of the project.

Despite repeated attempts, A2Z vice-president BPS Chauhan was not available for comments.
