Finally, PU girl hostellers can stay till late in library, work in labs

Finally, Panjab University girl students residing in varsity hostels will be allowed to study in library or work in laboratories during night as well and return to their hostels without paying late entry fee.

A circular in this regard has been sent to the girls’ hostels by the dean students’ welfare (DSW) office. According to which, girls will have to get a pro forma signed by library security guard on every visit. They will have to return to their respective hostels within 30 minutes and get the second entry marked by hostel security guard. The pro formas will be submitted to hostel wardens on a monthly basis, attendance will be marked accordingly and no late entry fine will be imposed. The free-of-cost pro forma are available at tuck shops.

One of the hostellers Agya Pal Kaur said, “Earlier, there used to be a lot of problems. We had to return to hostels before 9pm for attendance. If we used to get late by an hour, we were made to pay fine of Rs 150 to Rs 250 or else we were not allowed to enter till 5am next morning. We had protested a lot over this issue. The system has already been implemented.” DSW professor Navdeep Goyal said, “Earlier, the girls were fined if they stayed back at the libraries beyond 9pm.”

A society for students (SFS) leader said, “The best part is that there will be no fines.” However, senator Yograj Angrish said, “We often get complaints that girls at times mark hostel entry to go to libraries or labs, but go out of the university. We were also mulling a common pro forma that the girls can fill up to go out of the hostel during night, but no such pro forma has been planned to date.”
