After the wires fell on the roof of the houses and also on some vehicles parked in the street, residents complained at the centralised complaint number of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), but the wires were not repaired till evening.
Sanjeev Dhiman, a local, and general secretary of the BJP Janta Nagar Mandal, said there was heavy sparking in the wires before they fell on the road. “Fortunately, no one was present in the street and a major tragedy was averted. But, the incident should be enough to wake the PSPCL up to re place the old wires,” he added.
He said despite complaint in the morning itself, no one came to repair the wires and they remained on the road the whole day.
Area residents claimed that the wires of the area were damaged and old for a long time, and needed urgent replacement. But perhaps the PSPCL was waiting for some accident to make it move.Kuldee p Singh, executive engineer (Xen) of Janta Nagar division, said they got a complaint around 5:30pm, following which repairmen were sent to the spot.
He added that the replacement of wires, where needed, was under progress under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP), and it would be completed in a phased manner. The situation is same in other parts of the city also, as in Sector 39 near Sacred Heart School, residents complained of tilted electricity pole supporting high-tensions wires.
A local, Ravinder, said the pole had been in a tilted condition for the past two months, and it could fall anytime. Therefore, it was a serious threat to commuters and pedestrians.
