Edu dept issues notice to 302 schools over poor class 10 results

In the wake of poor class 10 examination results in 10 for the past three years, the Himachal education department has decided to issue “show cause” notices to over 300 state-run schools. After repeated complaints and reports of deteriorating educational standards in government schools, for the first time education department sought class 10 exam results from 2,178 high and higher secondary schools for the years 2011 to 2013 and analysed them in detail. It found the average for 302 schools for the past three years was below 40%.

“In a few schools the class 10 exam results was very poor. In some not more than 10% of students passed the exams in the past three years, for which the reports were sought,” said a government official who wished not to be named.

Additional chief education secretary PC Dhiman said the government was concerned about school education in the state and the class 10 examination results were a major indicator of the falling standards. “We are very much concerned about the results and reports. We have received a report on the past three years' class 10 exam results and analysed. Things will not end here; we'll now ask those schools where the average is less than 40% about the reason for the student's poor performance. This is not to blame them but to analyse where the problem lies”, he added.

A senior education department official said the reports on the class 10 exam results were yet to be analysed in detail but there were several schools where the results in a particular subject were poor. “In several schools the results in the mathematics exam was consistently poor. Now the department will ask the reason of poor performance. The department will hold a meeting with schools heads in each district discussing the results and the sliding educational standards,” he added.

There were about 223 schools where the average in class 10 exam results was over 90% during the past three years. The education department will also analyse the results so that uniform directions could be given to all schools. Justifying the reason behind analyzing three years' results, Dhiman they could give a better preview top judge the teaching and result trends.

The department is also considering a move to analyse class 10 exam results for last ten years and compile a detailed report. An end line survey has also exposed the educational standards in the state. The survey has revealed that around 50% students of 8th class got 'E grade' in English and around 40% in mathematics. If the examination would have been conducted these students have been failed in these subjects.

According to provisions of the Right to Education Act, no examination could be conducted till class 8 and owing to this educational qualities have been suffered a lot.
