Distribution of garbage dustbins to residents halted due to bad quality

The Municipal Corporation started distribution drive on Thursday morning, but as they started the drive, city mayor claimed that the bins were of bad quality, and cancelled their distribution.

Earlier, the MC had decided to distribute green (biodegradable) and blue (non-biodegradable) bins free of cost to the residents. The drive was supposed to be started in March, but it was not conducted due to the imposition of model code of conduct.

Finally, the drive commenced on Thursday, and when mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria started distributing the bins, including green for collecting biodegradable waste and blue for non-biodegradable waste, he found that the handles of dustbins were rusted.

He called the A2Z officials, who were accompanying him, and asked them the reason behind the bad quality of bins, as they were procured by the A2Z group.

Municipal Corporation commissioner Shruti Singh was also present when mayor raised the question.
Gohalwaria said the size of bins was too small, and they should be of double size.

However, the bins were distributed by mayor and commissioner only in one home, after which they retur ned back to their office.

MC joint commissioner Amarjeet Singh Sekhon said, “On the directions of mayor, the bins will be replaced. New bins will be of bigger size. MC and A2Z Waste Management Company will distribute these dustbins to around one lakh houses.”

Sekhon said they would also create awareness about t he usage of bins among people with the help of NGOs, so that people could use these bins in a proper way. He said replaced bins would be soon provided to the residents.

Kitchen waste, including used tea leaves, peels of fruits, vegetables, meat waste should be collected in green bin as this kind of waste is biodegradable. Whereas, plastic, rubber, glass, metal, medicine strips and iron should be collected in blue bins, as these are non-biodegradable waste.

He said wood, napkins and leather should also be collected in blue bin. After collection of litter from dif ferent bins, the waste will be used for preparation of compost, methane gas, refuse derived fuel, tiles and plastic pipes.
