CBSE urges schools to observe Vigilance Awareness Week

To inculcate the idea of good governance among students to help contribute in the social and economic development of our nation in future, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked schools to observe Vigilance Awareness Week from October 28 to November 2.

The theme this year is 'Promoting good governance - positive contribution of vigilance'.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Harmeet Kaur Waraich, principal of Nankana Sahib Public School, Gill road, said, “Every year we observe Vigilance Awareness Week and if we sensitise the students it brings changes among them. We are creating awareness among the students by conducting talks, taking the students for Sutlej cleaning.”

Pradeep Singh, principal of Shamrock Christian Senior Secondary school, said, “It is a good initiative by the board. When students participate in competitions like essay writing, slogan writing they are made to think and write. It puts an impact on the students and they become more aware.”

The schools have to organise various activities during the Vigilance Awareness Week reflecting the theme. Few activities suggested are -

For Classes 6 to 8

Banners or posters with slogans related to 'Corruption - an evil'
Essay writing on 'Good governance - need of the hour'

For Classes 9 to 10

Lectures by eminent personalities on role of media in promoting good governance and a seminar on 'Need to eliminate corruption for improving governance'

Why Vigilance week is celebrated

The Central Vigilance Commission has declared that the week beginning from October 31 every year should be observed as the Vigilance Awareness Week. The Vigilance Awareness Week is observed in memory of Bismarck of India, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. The Commission has decided that this year Vigilance Awareness Week would be observed from October 28 to November 2, 2013.
