Broken roads, improper garbage disposal giving tough time to Rajguru Nagar residents

Improper sanitation and broken roads are giving a tough time to the residents of Rajguru Nagar.

The area lacks proper sanitation system, as heaps of garbage and debris can be seen lying along roadsides. Almost all roads have got potholes, which lead to accidents. Moreover, the covers of drainage lines are also broken at several places that emit a foul smell. Congress grass, which causes severe skin-related problems, has grown up at several places in this one of the posh areas of the city.

The residents claimed that they had complained many times, but the officials of Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) have failed to redress the problems being faced by them.

JL Mehndiratta, general secretary, Rajguru Nagar Senior Citizen's Welfare Association, said, "The roads have broken badly, but no attention is being paid towards it. Several accidents have taken place in the area in past. Many of the streetlights are not functioning. Besides, the broken covers of drainage system are causing inconvenience to the commuters. Moreover, the water pressure also remains low in the area."

He said there was lack of sanitation in the area. Litter and other wastes were being dumped in vacant plots along roads.

Not only sanitation is an issue, but water that is supplied to homes is not being chlorinated. The residents claimed that illegal connections of sewage and water supply, which were installed in adjoining colonies, were leading to water woes and problems in sewage system in Rajguru Nagar.

Another resident, Gurcharan Singh, who is founder general secretary of the association, said, "LIT has failed to provide gardeners for the maintenance of parks. People here could suffer due to congress grass, which causes different health problems. Even several cases of dengue were reported last year from the area, but no fogging was done."

He demanded the LIT authorities to ensure supply of safe drinking water to the residents. Meanwhile, the residents also claimed that the area councillor was not paying attention towards their problems.

When contacted, Paramjit Kaur Shivalik, councillor of ward number 58, said, "The area falls under LIT, so they should redress the issues of people."

LIT chairperson Shruti Singh said, "Issues like broken roads and sanitation require estimates to be passed during the trust meeting, which could not happen due to Lok Sabha elections. The meeting will be organised soon. After getting permission from election commission, work regarding streetlights and cleanliness will be started."
