Pune’s next step in becoming a Smart City is in motion, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) launching a free Wi-Fi facility at 150 locations in the city from January 26 (Republic Day), 2018.

The PMC plans to cover the entire city under the free Wi-Fi scheme in the near future with the target of making Pune a ‘digital city’ set for the year 2020.

Pune mayor Mukta Tilak said that with the help of the Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited (PSCDCL), PMC will start this facility from Friday morning.

Primarily, the free Wi-Fi is now available in and around major public gardens, hospitals and near police stations.

Municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar and PSCDCL chief executive officer Rajendra Jagtap both briefed the media about this facility.

Kumar said that citizens will able to use 50 MB data free of cost at a speed of 512 kbps.

Google is also helping the PMC with this project. “Pune is the first city where Google is helping a corporation in India for such a project,” Kunal Kumar claimed.

This log-in name is Pune Wi-Fi and an online censor is in place.

Jagtap said that there is no downloading limit for government websites.

PSCDCL will also launch a grievance cell soon so that citizens can file complaints in case of poor network.

The commissioner said that PMC’s target is to make Pune a 100 per cent digital city where each citizen is digitally literate.

Kumar said that almost all important gardens and locations have been covered under this Wi-Fi facility, which will be expanded to 199 locations from the 150 activated on Republic Day.
