Mandate to admit more than 600 waiting RTE students in 56 Pune schools by May 11

The directorate of primary education has mandated the admission of over 600 students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, in 56 schools of Pune district. This was after a number of parents and RTE activists protested against the repeated delays in the process, aggravated by the denial of admissions by some schools. The schools had denied admissions to students from financially backward sections citing delay in payment of the reimbursements by the government.
However, before the process can proceed to the second round, a total of 674 students who qualified the first lottery are still without admissions. In order to clear the block, Sharad Gosavi, deputy director and primary education officer, declared admissions of these students a mandate that needs to be fulfilled by 56 colleges of Pune district, by May 11.
“We cannot let the matter spiral further as it will only hamper the future of the students. They deserve good education and we cannot let the students suffer based on technical differences or irregularities, if at all. All this will be compulsory and will be completed by May 11, so that we can move on to the next round of lottery soon. Also, these schools will not be allowed to take further legal action to cause another delay,” said Gosavi.
The Aurangabad bench of the Bombay high court, in the writ petition 687/2018, had mandated the schools from letting the students’ admissions under RTE and have been given the deadline of May 11.
Previously, the education department of the city’s zilla parishad had made an announcement that schools denying admission to RTE students will face cancellation of their candidacy.
