Deadline to secure admissions under RTE Act extended for second time; now till May 10

The state education department has extended the deadline for getting admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act till May 10. This decision has been taken as 24,124 seats under RTE are remaining as on May 4, the earlier deadline.

Out of the total 67,706 seats declared in the first lottery which was declared on April 8, only 44,110 admissions have been taken in the state. Considering the lesser number of admissions taken, Sunil Chauhan, director of the state primary education department, has extended the deadline for the second time.

In Pune district, out of the total 12,566 seats under RTE Act, only 8,504 have been taken. The Pune district has got the highest number of seats (12,566 ) in the first lottery, ever since RTE was introduced in 2012.

The total number of seats under RTE Act has gone by 9,340 . While in 2018, the number of seats was 1,26,119, this year it is 1,16,779.

A total of 67,706 seats have been taken under RTE Act so far in the state.

Talking about the deadline extension for the second time, education activist Mukund Kirdat called it a failure of the education department. “Incorrect Google map distance, demand of additional documents for verification process, queries in income proof documents raised by the officials are delaying the admission process. There are lesser number of admissions happening in the rural parts as most parents are illiterate and they are unable to understand the queries raised by the verification officers. We want all the rejected forms to be rechecked and then grant the admissions,” he said.
