The Indian Space Research Organisation on Saturday shared images of the first crew module (CM) of the Gaganyaan mission, India's maiden human spaceflight venture. CMs are where the astronauts are contained in a pressurized earthlike atmospheric condition during the mission. ISRO plans to undertake an inflight abort test of the crew escape system around October 25 to demonstrate mission's capabilities.

Senior officials at ISRO said the preparations in this regard have been done. “We are targeting for the abort test demonstration to happen around October 25. After that is achieved, we will go ahead with preparations of the uncrewed mission,” an official told HT. The objective of the upcoming test is to ”demonstrate (validate) in different conditions like high dynamic pressure and for transonic conditions," Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) S Unnikrishnan Nair told PTI.

The upcoming Flight Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1 (TV-D1) would be the first of the four abort missions of the Gaganyaan programme. The crewed mission will be planned based on the outcome of the successful test vehicle and the missions in which no crew is on board, officials explained. According to ISRO officials, the Gaganyaan project would demonstrate India's capability of taking a crew of two to three members to a circular orbit of about 400 km around the earth for a one-to-three days mission and bring them back safely to earth.
