Rio 2016 Live: Yogeshwar eliminated, USA win in basketball to clinch last gold

Yogeshwar Dutt loses his 65kg freestyle bout to Mongolia’s Mandakhnaran Ganzorigiin.

India’s last medal hope, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt’s journey in Rio got over in just six minutes, losing to Mongolia’s Mandakhnaran Ganzorigiin in his first bout. Rio Olympics was always going to be a tough ask for Dutt, as the world wrestling body had merged the 60kg category, in which he won the bronze medal in London Olympics, with the 66kg to make for a 65 kg class.

The hope was for Ganzorigiin to make it to the final, so that Dutt gets a shot at bronze medal through repechage. That, however, did not happen, with the Mongolian losing to Russia’s Soslan Ramonov in the third round.

In marathon, India’s Gopi and Kheta Ram clocked personal best in marathon. Kenya’s Kipchoge wins gold.

7:34 pm: As the wrestlers and marathoners slug it out on the last day of the Olympics, here is what the rest of the athletes are up to:

Yusra Mardini, the Syrian swimmer who fled the country with her family in a dinghy, then swam the sea to reach ashore, has had her life changed with her participation in the Olympics as a refugee athlete. If anyone deserves the sun-kissed beaches of Rio, it is her:

That is not to say the others don’t:

Hungary’s ‘Iron Lady’, Katinka Hosszu, who is more like a torpedo when in pool, has found her spot:

5.05pm: In men’s 65kg qualification wrestling, after first period, India’s Yogeshwar Dutt trailing by 0-1.

5:00 pm: The bout is about to begin. Yogeshwar Dutt in orange against Mongolia’s Mandakhnaran Ganzorigiin in blue.

5:03 pm: Ganzorigin takes the first point.

5:06 pm: A 3-0 lead for the Mongolian. Dutt has a fight in his hands.

5:11 pm: Dutt loses to Ganzorigiin. The Indian could not breach the Mongolian’s defence. The only hope for India is for Ganzorigiin to advance to the final, in which case Dutt will get a second chance in the form of repechage. The chances of that is, however, very slim with Ganzorigiin having to beat much stronger opponents to do so.

5:19 pm: Repechage, through which route Sushil Kumar got his medal before, and Sakshi Malik got her bronze this Olympics is the buzz word again.

5:22 pm: The other results in the 65kg class is as follows: Bulgaria’s Stefanov Borislav Novachkov beats Iran’s Abolfazl Meisam Nasiri 10-7; Iran’s Mohammad Ali Reza Yazdini beats Turkey’s Ibrahim Bolukbasi 8-0; World champion and favourite to win gold here, Italy’s Frank Chamizo, of Cuban descent, defeats Armenia’s Devid Safaryan; China’s Katai Yeerlanbieke beats Australia’s Sahit Prizreni; Russia’s Soslan Ramonov beats Canadian Haislan Antonio Veranes Garcia 7-1. The bout between Cuba’s Alejandro Enrique Valdes Tobier and Turkey’s Mustafa Kaya ended 4-all.

5:48 pm: Dutt’s loss has turned the Twitter timeline of most Indians to a tussle between hope and despair.

5:59 pm: To tilt it to the hope side, here is a good news. Ganzorigiin has beaten China’s Katai Yeerlanbieke. C’mon Ganzorigiin! You can do it. We are with you!

6:02 pm: The men’s marathon has been flagged off. India have three representative here; Thanackal Gopi, Kheta Ram and Nitendra Singh. A medal though is unlikely. But hey! Olympics isn’t just about winning!

6:21 pm: Over on the volleyball court, the US are facing Russian in a bronze medal playoff. This may not be the showpiece event, but with the political friction between the two, the match does have interest from outside the world of volleyball.

6: 32 pm: In other update:

6:43 pm: No repechage for Dutt. His Mongolian conqueror Ganzorigiin was outclassed by Russia’s Soslan Ramonov in the third round. Clearly the quality in fray this time is much higher.

6:58 pm: As we track the marathon, here is an article on the biomechanics of the sport: Mo Farah and the silent revolution in distance running.
