Rio 2016: Day 3 at the games, as it happened

Sorry to disappoint you, but it has not been a good day at Rio Olympics for India. London Games gold medallist Abhinav Bindra was shooting brilliantly, but had to settle for fourth spot. Manavjit and Chenai did not make the final in trap shooting. On the turf, men’s hockey team conceded a late goal to lose to defending champions Germany; women were outclassed 0-3 by Britain. The swimmers, both wild cards, were more or less there for the experience.

But hey! Don’t get all gloomy out there. Remember, Dipa Karmakar is in the vault final; Jitu Rai still has his favourite 50m pistol event left; and then the men and women of steel are to take to the mat in wrestling.

There has been plenty of great performances on the international front, however. Brazil’s Rafaela Silva, who grew up in the favelas, won the gold in women’s judo -57kg, an inspirational story that. Kohei Uchimura and Co helped Japan knock China from their perch in the men’s team gymnastics.Hungary’s Katinka Hossz is making individual medley, the toughest routine in swimming, look easy. Michael Phelps has advanced to the 200m butterfly semifinals to stay on for a face-off against Hungarians Tamas Kenderesi and Laszlo Cseh, and familiar rival Chad le Clos of South Africa.

8:45am (IST): Oscar Figueroa, a 33-year-old Colombian who practises meditation and was recently sentenced to 16 months in prison, broke down in tears and retired after winning Olympic gold in the men’s 62kg weightlifting on Monday.

8:10am (IST): Another gold on its way for team USA?

8:02am: (IST): Novak Djokovic suffered a second Olympic Games defeat in the space of 24 hours when he and Nenad Zimonjic were knocked out of the men’s doubles. The Serb pair lost 6-4, 6-4 to Brazilian fourth seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares.

7:34am (IST): Lilly King adds another gold for USA. Wins 100m breaststroke final with a time of 1:04.93, an Olympics record.

7:13am (IST): United States’ Ryan Murphy wins the men’s 100m backstroke with a time of 51.97secs, breaking the Olympic record. This was Murphy’s first appearance at the Olympics.

7:04am(IST): The ‘Iron lady of Hungary’, Katinka Hosszu, wins the women’s 100m backstroke event with a time of 58.45secs.

6:57am(IST): Sun Yang of China wins the men’s 200m freestyle to take gold.

6:55am (IST): Guys, we know this is an Olympics blog, but thought you may want to know that Paul Pogba has completed his move from Juventus to Manchester United. The move breaks the world transfer record. More on that, here.

6:20am (IST): Indians in action on Tuesday evening are as follows:

5:18 am (IST): Serena advances to the third round. Venus may have faltered, but the younger of Williams sisters is a different game. She beat Alize Cornet 7-6 (5), 6-2.

5:09 am (IST): In basketball, a not-so-Dream-Team USA were held by Venezuela in the first quarter. They, however, won the second 48-26, and third 75-51. The last quarter in progress with USA leading 89-53.

5:05 am (IST): Serena Williams leads the second set against France’s Alize Cornet 4-1. The American had to fight hard to win the first set 7-6 (5).

4:00 am (IST): That’s it then. India walk out 0-3 losers against Britain. India qualified for the Olympics after almost three decades, and that showed on Tuesday. It’s a draw and a loss in the two games held so far.

3:38 am (IST): End of third quarter. India really need some water. And a lot of fresh ideas if they seek a turnaround.

3:20 am (IST): It’s going downhill for India. Concede the third goal in the early minutes of the third quarter. This could get a lot worse as India have rarely looked part.

3:08 am (IST): That had been a disastrous quarter for India. The girls need to sort their defensive organisation quick, if not Britain are running away with this.

3:04 am (IST): A double blow. Britain score another. A defensive error by India, let too much space and time. And this level, you get punished for that.

3:01 am (IST): It had been coming. Though Rani Rampal showed intent in the second quarter, the opener was Great Britain’s to take. And they do it through a penalty corner. The scorer is Giselle Ansley. India 0 Britain 1.

2:54 am (IST): Meanwhile, hosts Brazil have won their first gold of the Games. Rafaela Silva overcame Sumiya Dorjsuren of Mongolia to win gold in the women’s -57kg judo. Silva raised her arms to the crowd in triumph as she beat Dorjsuren on a waza-ari, reports news agency Reuters.Gold for Silva marks a fairytale rise to the Olympic podium from a childhood in Rio’s notorious “City of God” favela, and provides redemption for a disappointing London 2012 when she was disqualified in the early rounds for a rule violation. Portugal’s Telma Monteiro and Japan’s Kaori Matsumoto won bronze.

2:49 am (IST): End of first quarter. Our girls had to stop a determined Britain. But the scoreline is what matters, and it reads 0-0.

2:39 am (IST): Great Britain have shown more intent in the early minutes of the game on the artificial turf. India women’ however, are holding it tight in defence.

1:54 am (IST): Tennis could well be Spain’s hunting ground. Rafael Nadal has advanced in both singles and doubles, while in the women’s singles, Garbine Muguruza looks like she has got the measure of Japan’s Nao Hibino in the second round.

1:49 am (IST): China’s Aisen Chen and Yue Lin take the gold in men’s synchronous 10m platform. USA’s David Boudia and Steele add silver to the country’s tally.

1:28 am (IST): This is all falling in place for Andy Murray. After Novak Djokovic’s surprise exit, Jo-Wilfried Tsong is knocked out. A 6-4, 6-3 win for the Luxembourg’s Muller.

1:06 am (IST): It’s a little sombre out here, isn’t it? Well, feast your eyes with the diving competition, then.

12:55 am (IST): Del Potro ensures the second set was just a blip not a theme. Wins the third set 6-3 to wrap up the match. The Argentine advances to the third round 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

12:18 am (IST): Juan Martin del Potro loses the second set to Portugal Joao Sousa 1-6. It’s 1-1 now since he had won the first set 6-3. Can he come back from that terrible set?

11:15pm (IST): Earlier in the day, Indian archer Laxmirani Majhi lost to Slovakia’s Longova Alexandra in the last-32 elimination round.

10:56 pm (IST): For the uninitiated, an individual medley involves butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. The distances of each style is equally divided, for instance in 200m IM, a swimmer will cover 50m in each. It is one of the toughest routines in pool. Katinka Hosszu, however, is making it look easy. Michael Phelps of women’s swimming?

10:52 pm (IST): Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu is turning out to be the star of women’s Individual Medley. She has set a world record in 400m IM on Sunday, and now has set an Olympic record in the 200m Heat. Time: 2:07.45. The world record of 2:06.12 is also held by her.

10:36 pm (IST): Germany’s Angelique Kerber defeats Canadian favourite Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets in the women’s singles second round.

10:25 pm (IST): The 200m butterfly is hotly contested. Besides the Heat leader Kenderesi, the semifinals would also involve South Africa’s Chad le Clos, Hungarian Laszlo Cseh and Irvine. For the record, the world record is 1:51.51, held by, well, Michael Phelps.

10:20 pm (IST): Michael Phelps finishes third in 200m butterfly heat. Hungary’s Tamar Kenderesi finishes first with a great last lap. Australia’s Grant Irvine is second. Phelps was a seconds slower than Kenderesi. Not the start the 19-time Olympics medallist was seeking for in the individual events. India’s Sajan Prakash is out of contention, meanwhile.

10:08 pm (IST): Lest you forget, India’s Sajan Prakash is in Olympics as a wild card, under world swimming body’s ‘universality clause’. Some go to Olympics to win, some to participate and improve for future challenges. Sajan Prakash falls in the latter category.

9:52pm (IST): Yet another disappointment for India.

9:42pm (IST): India’s Sajan Prakash will take to the pool for the 200m butterfly heats shortly.

9:36pm (IST): Shivani finishes second in the 200m freestyle heat with a timing of 2:09.30, four seconds behind leader Matelita Buadromo of Fiji.

8:09pm (IST): We’ve got a game on our hands, boys! It’s 1-1 at halftime, and India have looked more lethal as the game has gone on. Germany 1-1 India.

8:07pm (IST): ICYMI, Dipa Karmakar vaulted into history on Sunday. The 22-year-old gymnast will be competing in the final on Sunday, August 14.

8:01pm (IST): Over at the Shotgun Range, Manavjit Singh Sandhu is in contention for the final berth. He is placed 7th after four series. Kynan Chenai’s down at 18th.

8:00pm (IST): India equalise! Rupinder Pal Singh converts a penalty corner in the 23rd minute. Germany 1-1 India.

7:53pm (IST): One feels India would have done much better if we had a cheerleader like Samuel L Jackson. The Academy Award-winning actor was... ecstatic, to say the least, after Michael Phelps won his 19th gold.

7:52pm (IST): Germany break the deadlock. Niklas Wellen scores in the 18th minute. Germany 1-0 India.

7:48pm (IST): Laxmirani Majhi loses women’s individual archery elimination tie to Slovakia’s Alexandra Longova 1-7.

7:47pm (IST): India hockey team holding their own against defending champions Germany. First quarter ends 0-0.

7:45pm (IST): Laxmirani Majhi holds Longova in the third set. Trails 1-5 overall.

6:46pm (IST): Abhinav Bindra has qualified for the finals! Finishes seventh in the qualification. 10m air rifle final begins at 8:30pm (IST). Heartbreak for Gagan Narang, but he can make it up in his two remaining events in Rio.
