The city police on Thursday doused the fire of a pyre to recover the body of a married woman who was allegedly killed by her in-laws. The incident occurred at Dabra village of Dadri area on Thursday morning when the police got information about some people trying to cremate the body illegally.

“Parents of the deceased had approached us informing about the incident. As we reached the crematorium, the in-laws of the deceased had fled from there. The body was found in a burning pyre and it was doused to recover the remains,” said Anurag Singh, deputy superintendent of police.

Police said the deceased was identified as Surekha, 28. She was married to Dabra resident Yogender five years ago.

“Relatives of the deceased alleged that she was being tortured frequently for dowry and her in-laws often thrashed her and locked her up in the house. A case was registered at the Dadri police station against Yogender, his parents and brother under sections of murder and dowry,” Singh said.

The police said they have sent the remains of the body for post-mortem and asked the doctors to preserve the viscera, if found.

“The body was found in a badly burnt stage. We are not sure whether it was burnt at the crematorium or somewhere else and then they tried to cover it up. Currently, we cannot say how she died. She had a 4-year-old son who was recovered from the residence of the accused,” Singh said.

Police said Yogender runs a mobile shop in the area which he had opened recently.

“We are trying to locate the shop of the accused. His relatives are being quizzed and a team has been formed to conduct raid at his possible hideouts. We will arrest the accused soon. Post-mortem reports are awaited,” Singh added.

The police said they had visited the residence of the accused but it was vacant.

“No sign of scuffle was found at the accused persons’ house. Neighbours have been asked to help the police in the investigation. We have also sought the CCTV footage installed at the road they took to flee to get the registration number of their vehicle,” Singh said.
