The city police have arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in smuggling illicit liquor. The accused, Kuldeep and Kavit, were arrested from Sector 80 with 15 cartons of illicit India-made foreign liquor (IMFL), police said.

“The accused were spotted travelling in a Hyundai Santro car. A checking squad near Sector 80 signalled them to stop, but the accused accelerated and tried to dodge the checking team. However, the alert policemen immediately stopped their car using the barricades and overpowered them. The team found 15 cartons of illicit liquor stashed in the boot and the rear of their car,” said Shailendra Pratap Singh, station house officer (SHO), Phase 2 police station.
According to the police, the accused had been involved in liquor smuggling for a long time and had been making a huge profit.
“An FIR was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian penal code (IPC) and the Excise Act at Phase 2 police station. They were arrested and sent to judicial custody. During their interrogation, they confessed to smuggling Haryana-made liquor into the city,” said Singh.
Police said accused Kuldeep, 25, is a resident of Bhuda village and Kavit is a resident of Salarpur village of Sector 39.
“We are investigating their possible involvement in other cases of smuggling. We are also trying to locate their customers who bought illicit liquor in huge quantities, thus causing a heavy loss to the government exchequer. The car in which they were smuggling the liquor was also seized,” said Singh.
