Over 300 prosecuted in three months for illegally using beacons in the city

Easy access to beacons in the city’s markets has helped increase the number of fake VIPs in Noida and Greater Noida.

According to records of the city police, more than 300 people were prosecuted in the last two months for illegally installing VIP hooters in their vehicles, and about 30 people were prosecuted for illegally using beacons.

On Tuesday, the driver of a senior government official of Amroha was prosecuted for mounting a blue VIP beacon and a Ghaziabad resident was prosecuted for using a hooter in his vehicle in Phase 2.

“During a special checking drive, a Hyundai Santa FE SUV with a Haryana registration number was spotted with a blue VIP beacon atop it. The driver, Jaiprakash Saxena, did not have legal documents for the beacon. A Ghaziabad resident, Vipin Tyagi, was also caught with VIP hooters in his car. Both were prosecuted,” said Laxmi Chauhan, SHO, Phase 2 police station.

On Monday, the traffic police had prosecuted two people near Sector 14A on the Delhi-Noida border for the same offences. One of them claimed that his car belonged to the convoy of a Bahujan Samaj Party MLA from Shamli, while other said that his car is the part of a convoy of a state minister.

“Both were using VIP beacons and hooters illegally,” said a senior police official.

A total of Rs. 22,000 was collected as a fine from the violators, the police said.

Only two stickers of authentication are issued for private vehicles of ministers or MLAs. “According to rule, blue or red beacons or hooters can be mounted on government vehicles only. There is a challan of Rs. 1,000 for illegal use of hooter and Rs. 100 for VIP beacons. Police personnel have been directed to stop private vehicles using VIP beacons or hooters at strategic locations across the city,” said Rajiv Narayan Mishra, superintendent of police (traffic), Gautam Budh Nagar.
