NHRC seeks report on ragging at DPS Noida from UP government

The National Human Rights Commission on Thursday issued notice to top officials of the UP government and the Gautam Budh Nagar district, demanding a report on the alleged ragging of two students at Delhi Public School Noida.

Two Class 11 students of DPS Noida were allegedly beaten up on Sunday night by a group of Class 12 students. The police had registered a case against six identified and 12 unidentified students.

The commission has directed the chief secretary, district magistrate and senior superintendent of police of Gautam Budh Nagar district to submit the report within four weeks.

The rights panel issued the notice taking suo motu cognizance of media reports.

It said ragging had been banned in educational institutions and certain guidelines on recommendations of the Raghvan Committee had been issued in this regard. The school authorities are legally bound and responsible to ensure protection of students from the menace of ragging, the commission said.

“Observing that the incident raises issue of serious violation of right to life and dignity of young students, the commission has issued notices to the chief secretary, government of Uttar Pradesh, district magistrate and senior superintendent of police, Gautam Budh Nagar calling for reports within four weeks,” the commission said in a statement.

On Sunday night, a class 11 student was allegedly attacked by a group of students of Class 12 with iron rods inside the hostel of DPS in Noida Sector 30. One of his friends, also a Class 11 student, tried to help him but was roughed up. Both the students were admitted to the Kailash hospital from where they were discharged after treatment.

On Wednesday, the father of the victim refused to send him back to the school. However, the friend of the victim has joined the school and is attending classes.

The school administration suspended all six students named in the FIR and initiated an enquiry in the matter.

District magistrate, Gautam Budh Nagar NP Singh said, “I have asked the police to properly investigate the case. A report will be sent accordingly.”
