The woman, a Delhi resident who studies in a university in Noida, broke down during questioning by police and later confessed in front of a magistrate, an official said.

The national capital has earned notoriety as one of the most unsafe places for women in India and police are often at the receiving end for alleged insensitivity towards survivors of sexual assaults.

However, there are growing complaints of women using recently-strengthened laws to settle personal scores. In recent times, courts have also thrown out several fake rape cases.

Police had launched a manhunt on December 2 after registering a case based on the woman’s complaint.

The woman had missed her exam after reaching the university late and cooked up the gang rape incident fearing an adverse reaction from her parents.

The woman claimed she was abducted in a car from Safdarjung by four unidentified men and gang-raped near the Mahamaya flyover in Noida at gunpoint. Safdarjung police registered and FIR which was later transferred to Noida police.

“The matter was investigated but no corroborative evidence was found. On December 10, the girl visited the Sector 39 police station with her parents. Asked to repeat her statement, the girl broke down and confessed she cooked up the story as she had missed the exams,” said Amarnath Yadav, station house officer.

A police official who led the investigation said the woman was let off “with a stern warning”.
