FIR filed, Amity student’s family launches campaign on social media for justice

Four days after an Amity University student died on the campus, the police have registered a case of death due to negligence against unidentified persons.

Udit Shankar Singh, 19, a B.Tech first-year student at Amity University, had fallen to death from the fifth floor of the hostel on November 24. His family had filed a complaint three days back, seeking thorough probe in the matter. Manisha Singh, Udit’s sister has started a social media campaign seeking justice for her brother.

“A case under section 304 A (causing death due to negligence) was registered against unidentified persons following the complaint of his family members. We are investigating the matter. We have checked the CCTV footage of the campus at the time of the incident but we didn’t find anything suspicious,” said Amarnath Yadav, station house officer, Sector 39 police station. The police said they also questioned a number of his classmates to know more about the incident but no clues about his death were found.

He was staying in hostel H-3, meant exclusively for first year students. He had skipped the Physics exam scheduled for Thursday from 11.30am to 2pm. Some of the students found Udit’s body lying in a pool of blood on the hostel premises at 1pm.

The Amity University administration said they will cooperate in the investigation.

“We also want the police to get to the bottom of the matter. We will fully support them in the investigation,” said Savita Mehta, vice president, communications, Amity University. The university had also launched an internal probe in the incident.

Meanwhile, Udit’s sister Manisha Singh has started a campaign on Facebook and Twitter with hashtag, #justiceforudit, blaming the university administration for negligence.

“…Udit died because of Amity being negligent. The floor he had allegedly fallen from has had a defective latch for quite some time and we’re told that students used to frequent that place for studying. What sort of an institution allows such a blatant violation of security regulations? How was there no one to keep a check on what the students do? Why was the latch not fixed timely… (sic),”she wrote on her Facebook page.
