KOLKATA: The family members of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose came down heavily on the perpetrators of the Mathura violence on Friday, saying the movement was misguided and harming the reputation of the freedom fighter.

The violence has allegedly been backed by the Azad Bharat Vidhik Vaicharik Kranti Satyagrahi, a sect that claims to be the “true followers of Netaji”.

“Netaji took up arms to fight a colonial power. But now we are independent and there is a Constitution and law of the land. No one has the right to take the law in their hands,” said Chandra Bose, Netaji’s grand-nephew.

He added, “It is also sad to learn that 24 people have died in the violence. There should be a probe into the police firing. There are ways to handle a crowd using water jets, rubber bullets and tear gas shells.”

Another grand-nephew of Netaji, Avijit Roy, said the freedom fighter never believed in fanaticism and stressed on discipline. “I have never heard of such an organisation before. Netaji never believed in such fanaticism and mindless violence,” said Roy.
