Out with his new album after seven years, Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan talks about a change in people’s choices

has belted out several soothing Sufi-inspired numbers for Bollywood since he started singing in India. And those who know the 40-year-old maestro vouch for the fact that his nature is as mild as his music.



Ask popular Pakistani singer where he gets his calm demeanour from, and he politely says: "Have you ever seen my guru (late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) in any negative light? I just follow what he taught me."



The singer recently released his new album —

— after a gap of seven years. Although he enjoyed working on it, there’s one thing that bothers him — the short duration of songs nowadays.



"You’ll be surprised to know that the minimum time for a

qawwali

is around 17 minutes and the longest that I’ve recorded goes past one hour. But all my songs in this album are on an average four minutes long. I don’t know why people can’t listen to longer songs.

Humein badi dikkat hoti hai

. Maybe, these days people are being told that they don’t have enough time, that’s why they should listen to long songs," he says.

Khan has performed several times in India. So, where does he enjoy performing more — Pakistan or India? "

Dono hi mere ghar hain

. It’s very difficult to choose. The love and adulation I get from both places is beautiful," says the Dil Toh Bachha hai Ji singer.

And, what’s on his hot list when performing abroad ? "When in France or Spain, I stick to Hindi film songs as the audience is mostly of Indian or Pakistani origin, but if there is are foreigners at the concerts, then I perform classical songs," he says.
