Tenders for 3 new Metro routes after polls

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will float tenders for three new metro rail routes after the Assembly polls.

The three routes include the 7.5 km-long Charkop-Dahisar line, the 12.4 km Ghatkopar (W)-Mulund line and the 18-km Andheri (E)-Dahisar (E) line. These three routes are part of the Phase II of the Mumbai Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). G Madan, Director, MRTS, said, “We’ll be calling tenders for these three routes after the elections.”

Sources in MMRDA said that these three metro routes from Phase II will connect the two Phase I metro routes in the city. The 11.8 km long Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar is being constructed and is expected to be complete by 2010.

The MMRDA is also carrying out surveys for the 32-km Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd route. “We will start identifying the roads and junctions where traffic can be diverted when work begins,” added the MMRDA source.

As part of the survey, the MMRDA will count the number of vehicles passing every junction for a week. The MMRDA would then prepare alternate routes, before floating tenders and beginning construction.
