This will help the government push the idea of linking Aadhaar to various schemes including scholarships for students and subsidy on LPG cylinders.

The state government has clarified that though it had no intention of making Aadhaar compulsory for government schemes and benefits, it will emphasise this at districts where the percentage was 80%.

The pilot projects by the central government to link Aadhaar with the schemes were implemented in Wardha district.

Wardha has the highest enrolment (92%) in the state followed by Amravati (83%) and now Mumbai, which crossed the 1crore mark last week.

According to an officer from the information and technology department, the enrolment of more than 1 crore people was a significant development.

“Though the response from the affluent class in south Mumbai and in the suburbs was low, the percentage of enrolment from the lower middle class was very high. Of the 1.23 crore population of the city and the suburbs, 1.01 crore have enrolled for Aadhaar. Nearly 91 lakh of the enrolled citizens have got their UID generated,” he said.

Mumbai and Mumbai suburbs have 21,000 and 29,400 beneficiaries of 11 government schemes (school-college scholarships, widow pensions) and the collectorates have already started linking bank account numbers with Aadhaar.
