JVPD scheme locals fear water-logged roads again

Residents of Juhu Vile Parle Development (JVPD) scheme locality are dreading the arrival of monsoon owing to the dismal condition of roads and nullahs in their area.

JVPD comprises Juhu, Vile Parle, Gulmohar Road and Four Bungalows areas, most of who are low-lying and face the problem of water-logging every year during monsoon. Residents fear that the situation will deteriorate as they are not happy with the pre-monsoon work done by the civic body.

The representatives of this advanced locality management (ALM) visited Gulmohar Road, Irla Nullah and Tenth Road, considered troublesome spots by the residents.

K-West ward officer Ramesh Pawar said, “I will take up the matter regarding condition of roads with the chief engineer of BMC. As for the nullahs, I have already discussed the issue with them.”

What the Juhu ALM Found:

This arterial road constructed by the Maharashtra Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) and maintained by the civic body has two hospitals and a school. The road is ridden with potholes and has an open manhole. There are several unpruned trees along the road, which are at a risk of uprooting and falling during spells of heavy rain.

“Over the past 5-6 years, there has been severe water-logging on this road, which puts students and patients visiting the area at risk. There have been several incidents of people injuring themselves while wading through the water-logged road.” - Anjali Bose, resident of Gulmohar Road

What the Juhu ALM Found:

Resurfacing of the road has been done shoddily; the level of road has been raised, which will obstruct flow of water from residents’ compounds. Also, the stormwater drain has been blocked with heaps of garbage.

IRLA NULLAH (1/10)

What the Juhu ALM Found:

The nullah is full of floating materials and requires urgent cleaning, in the absence of which, it will be a major troublemaker for residents during the monsoon.

“The nullah is proposed to be blocked by a builder with the necessary permission from the BMC. This move will wreak havoc during monsoon by worsening the water-logging situation in the entire area.” - Shirley Singh, a member of JVPD advanced locality management
