Raj Bhavan in Mumbai may get recycled water soon

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will finally lay a distribution network to supply recycled water to Raj Bhavan. A proposal for laying 830-metre-long water pipeline with a 6-inch diameter from Banganga to Raj Bhavan will be tabled in the next standing committee meeting on Wednesday.

The recycled water will be supplied to the Governor’s office and residence for gardening and other non-potable purposes.

To reduce pollution in the Arabian Sea, the BMC is planning several sewerage treatment plants (STP) to dispose treated water. Banganga STP was constructed by the civic body and has been in operation since 2014. It treats 1.5 million litre of water every day. This water is sold for commercial non-potable purpose at Rs14.52/ltr by the BMC. 

According to a source, this is only the first phase of laying pipelines and the second phase will involve 300-metre-long pipelines inside the Governor’s residence which will be done by Raj Bhavan officials.  

According to the proposal, once the orders are issued, the contractors will be given four months (excluding the monsoon) to complete the work. The appointment of the contractor will cost the civic body Rs79 lakh. Ashok Tawadia, chief hydraulic engineer, said, “This proposal is only to lay a network to distribute non-potable water from Banganga STP to Raj Bhavan.”
