Mumbai duo held in Gujarat for buying 15 gold biscuits using banned notes
A police officer said that though the duo was supposed to pick up the consignment from Surat, it was collected from Vapi as the transporter had already reached there
Bhilad Police arrested two men from Mumbai on Saturday at 11.30pm from Sarigam GIDC area and confiscated 15 gold biscuits worth Rs42 lakh. The duo had purchased the gold biscuits, weighing 1.5 kg, using banned Rs1,000 and Rs500 notes. The accused were identified as Nirmal Badrinath Sharma, an employee of a Boisar-based jeweller, and Shrenik Hasmukh Mehta of Goregaon, who had arranged for the gold. They will be produced in the Bhilad court on Monday .

Inspector Shailendra Goswami from Bhilad police station, Gujarat, said, “We received a tip-off that two men would be transporting gold and accordingly we laid a trap. We intercepted a Hyundai Elantra (MH 48 F 1122) the moment it entered the lane of a reputed restaurant in Sarigam GIDC area. We searched the car and recovered the gold.”
The officer said that though the duo was supposed to pick up the consignment from Surat, it was collected from Vapi as the transporter had already reached there. Both Sharma and Mehta were arrested and booked under sections 41 (d) and 102 (power of police to seize property) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), 1973.
“We’ll be questioning the jeweller soon,” Goswami said.
