Mumbai cop attacked after asking biker to take U-turn on one-way road
Mumbai city news: A relative of the biker, who was passing by, hit the constable with a paver block
A 43-year-old traffic constable was allegedly attacked by a 23-year-old man for asking the latter’s relative to take a U-turn on a one-way stretch on Ghatkopar Link Road on Friday.
Vinayak Shankar Shewale allegedly hit the constable, Deepak Neekale, on his head and hand with a paver block.
Shewale, who works as a driver, was arrested from his residence in Jambulpada at Ghatkopar and charged with attempted murder.
The incident took place below the metro tracks on Ghatkopar Link Road at 12.30 pm.
According to the police, Neekale saw Shewale’s relative driving in the wrong lane and asked him to return.
The man, who was on a Bullet, took a U-turn without arguing.
He was not fined for the violation. Shewale witnessed the incident while he was crossing the road and confronted Neekale, said a source.
“Shewale stays in the same area and as he was crossing the road, he saw that his relative was sent back by the constable as it was a one-way road. He started arguing with the constable and attacked him with a paver block,” said senior inspector Venkat Patil from Ghatkopar police station.
Shewale initially hit the constable on his head and hand, said Patil. Neekale received eight stitches for his head injury. “The constable was accompanied by a warden who took him to a nearby hospital,” added Patil.
Shewale has been booked under Sections 307 (attempted to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging of his duty), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court and remanded in police custody.
