Mumbai airport landing system clears final test, operations to get normal from Sunday
Though these tests were completed early on Friday, a green signal was awaited from AAI officials in New Delhi
Fifteen days after the upgrading work on the Instrument Landing System (ILS) commenced, passengers flying to and from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) will not see flight delays. According to senior airport officials, tests carried out by Airports Authority of India (AAI) on the airport’s main runway using a calibration flight have been found satisfactory.
Though these tests were completed early on Friday, a green signal was awaited from AAI officials in New Delhi. When the nod finally arrived later in the evening, it was decided that the ILS would start operating from 5:30am on Sunday.
Airport officials said that flight operations would resume normalcy from Sunday morning.
The ILS work began on May 17 and was originally scheduled to be completed by June 5.
On Friday, Mumbai airport faced an average delay of around 50 minutes in departing flights whereas all the arriving flights saw an average delay of 24 minutes. This delayed around 375 departing and 178 arriving flights until 11pm.
In all, the ILS upgrading delayed around 5,000 flights at Mumbai airport.
