Man held at Mumbai airport for trying to kill wife in 2016, was travelling to Dubai

Mandar Pagare allegedly tried to starngle hsi wife after her father said they could not meet his dowry demand of ₹5 lakh

A 32-year-old man from Kopar Khairane, who allegedly harassed and attempted to kill his 27-year-old wife in 2016, was held at Mumbai airport on Tuesday.

Mandar Pagare, who works with a private company, got married in 2016. But within a week of their marriage, Pagare started harassing his wife for dowry and demanded 5 lakh. He kept harassing woman by repeatedly asking her about her affairs before their marriage.

When the woman’s family said they would not be able to meet Pagare’s demand, he and his family members tried to strangle the women to death. The woman some somehow saved herself and informed her parents about the attempt to murder her.

“An FIR was registered under section 498a (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 307 (attempt to murder), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the family and eight people were arrested in May 2016,” said an officer from Kopar Khairane police station.

Pagare, prime accused, went into hiding and the police issued a lookout notice against him. His photograph and other details were sent to different police stations and airport authorities.

“On Tuesday, he reached the airport to leave for Dubai. The airport police identified and detained Pagare when he went to for immigration formalities. They then informed us and we arrested him on Wednesday,” he said.

The accused was produced in court on Thursday and was remanded in judicial custody.

“We are now trying to find out where he was hiding for the past two years,” said another officer.

Sources from Kopar Khairane police station said Pagare was abroad for the past two years and he had come to India a month ago.
