Goregaon man loses ₹69,330 to ATM card fraud

A 35-year-old resident of Goregaon (west) woke up to see four messages from his bank informing him that ₹69,330 had been withdrawn from his account overnight. A case of cyber-fraud has been registered against an unknown person on Thursday.

According to Goregaon police, the complainant Rakeshkumar Yadav,35, had given them a written complaint alleging on May 23 , at around 2am he received four messages from his bank alerting him about the amount being withdrawn using his ATM card details.

Yadav told the police that he is a resident of Jawahar Nagar in Goregaon (west) and works in a private firm. He said he uses an ATM card for making payments but had no idea how his card details got leaked.

The Goregaon police said based on his allegations and the bank statements provided by him, a FIR was lodged on Thursday under sections 419 (impersonation) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. The police have also applied sections 66C and 66D of the IT Act for identity theft and impersonation using a computer source respectively.

A police official from Goregaon police station said,”We are looking at the possibility of card cloning done using a skimmer at the ATM or while making payment. A second way through which money can be withdrawn is vishing (voice phishing) but the complainant claimed that he did not receive any fraud phone calls where criminals pose as bank officials, and steal your data and OTP which is used to withdraw money.”
