FYJC third list today, 99,735 seats up for grabs for students in Mumbai

 The third merit list for the First Year Junior Colleges (FYJC) will be declared today on the state education department’s website at 11am. Students will vie for 99,735 seats across city colleges in round three of the admissions.

While the list would be declared after a series of delays, there is a growing concern among parents and students as 58,283 vacant seats under the minority quota in linguistic minority colleges are still not a part of the Centralised Admission Process (CAP). Several prominent minority colleges like St Xavier’s, Jai Hind, KC and HR have only a handful seats in their general quota and would thus remain more or less out of bounds in the third admission rounds even as a chunk of their minority quota seats lie vacant.

With the state education department yet to announce how these vacant seats would be allotted, parents said that they would find it difficult to decide whether or not one should secure a seat in the college allotted in the third round.

“Many of us were waiting for the third round of admissions to begin, hoping that minority seats would be kept open for the general category students if there is a progress in the court case. But with the next hearing due only after a week, we have to either settle for a college which is not of our choice or take the risk of waiting till the end of CAP for the seats to open up,” said Mamta Jain, a parent.

The Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court in its interim order on July 12, asked the government to permit colleges to fill their minority, in-house and management quota seats till the end of the CAP rounds. This led to changes in the seat matrix, as the over 58,000 quota seats which were opened up for general category students, were given back to the colleges, leaving students and parents from the open category in the lurch.

With the frequent changes in seat matrix, principals said that it would be difficult to estimate the cut-offs this time.

“We have no seats left in general quota for the Arts and Science stream, while there are only 14 seats left for the Commerce stream, the allocations for which would happen soon. With the revised seat matrix, an estimation of the cut-off trend seems difficult at this point,” said Ashok Wadia the principal of Jai Hind College, Churchgate.

Students can confirm admissions to the colleges allotted to them between July 31 and August 2.
