The Vikhroli police have arrested a 60-year-old for ramming his car into a vada pav vendor on Monday. The incident left seven wounded.

The accused, Shabbir Sayyad Ali, was returning to his Kannawar Nagar residence after meeting a relative.

An officer from Vikhroli police station said, “The incident took place around 9.30pm when Ali was returning home with his wife in their car. He lost control of the vehicle at Ganesh Mandir Marg and hit a cyclist before ramming into a vada pav vendor.”

The injured — Laxman Chandu Khopadekar, Narayan Gorakh Gaikwad, Vaishnavi Adinath Pantge, Shashikant Nalavade, Surendra Gupta and Gyanoba Sasurkar — were admitted to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, Rajawadi, and Sion Hospitals.

“It appears that the accused hit the accelerator instead of applying breaks by mistake. A case was registered based on the statement of Gaikwad, who sustained head injuries and has been admitted to Sion Hospital,” added the officer.

The accused has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), and other relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act.
