According to the FIR filed against the duo, on April 19, the accused threatened the couple saying they (the couple) were hiding Choksi’s ill-gotten jewellery. Under the pretext of carrying out an investigation, the accused entered the couple’s house.

The scared couple gave away jewellery and cash worth Rs12 lakh to the officers. The constable then allegedly took the manager’s wife to a different room and molested her, said Nehru Nagar police station officials. “Investigation against woman police sub-inspector Suverna Mane and constable Deepak Khatal has been transferred to unit 6 of the Mumbai crime branch,” said a senior officer.

The FIR says that Khatal had informed Mane that he had received a tip-off about gold hidden at the couple’s residence. However, she left without notifying her seniors, and never mentioned about the investigation or recovery to her superiors.

After the incident, the couple approached the police and an FIR was registered against the duo. A senior officer asked Khatal to return the stolen jewellery which he did not, following which an FIR was registered against the two officials. “Khatal and the victim were neighbours a few years ago and Khatal might have taken this step out of revenge which will be accounted for in the investigation,” said a crime branch officer.

“Khatal and Mane, however, have secured anticipatory bail. Khatal has not reported to duty since the FIR,” said a crime branch officer.
