Movie review: Entertainment is a sitcom with random gags fixed in a story about a dog

The most charitable thing I can say about Entertainment is kutte ka kaam bahut accha hai. The jokes are purposefully mindless, but they come at you at such a furious pace that you are lulled into an exhausted laughter, writes Anupama Chopra.

Watching Akshay Kumar’s new film Entertainment put me in flashback mode. I went back to 1985. KC Bokadia’s Teri Meherbaniyan, starring Jackie Shroff, Poonam Dhillon and a black Labrador named Moti, had just released. As usual, the video library boy brought a pirated cassette to my home. I asked him how the film was. With a straight face he replied, kutte ka kaam bahut accha hai. That’s pretty much the most charitable thing I can say about Entertainment; kutte ka kaam bahut accha hai.

The film is the directorial debut of writer-lyricists Sajid and Farhad. The two have worked extensively with Rohit Shetty, writing blockbusters such as Golmaal 3, Singham and Chennai Express. They are the masters of a willfully low-IQ and absurd situational humour. Their best work is cheerfully silly and yet it makes you laugh.

But Entertainment has none of the inspired lunacy of Golmaal 3. The film is set up as a sitcom with random gags tacked onto a sliver thin story about a dog named Entertainment who inherits fortune worth Rs. 3,000 crore.

The jokes are purposefully mindless, but they come at you at such a furious pace that you are lulled into an exhausted laughter.

However, post interval, Entertainment falls to another level of awful. At one point, a dog latches onto Sonu Sood’s crotch. It’s so unfunny that I got depressed.
