Officials claimed there was nothing wrong with the move, considering that former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had also encouraged the use of his photograph in articles related to several education-related schemes – including bags, steel plates and glasses, and laptops.

Sources said government officials have already prepared designs of the new schoolbag, and will present it to Adityanath for his approval. Nearly 1.8 crore schoolchildren in Uttar Pradesh are likely to get the new schoolbags.
“Yes, it has been discussed at the top level, and a number of prototypes have been created already. However, the final decision will be taken after getting the chief minister’s consent,” an official said.
The state government had recently decided to distribute schoolbags featuring the image of former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, instead of dumping them. However, some of the old bags still remain undistributed. “It will be interesting to see what the government does with those bags – distribute them or replace Akhilesh Yadav’s photograph with the joint image of Modi and Yogi,” a political observer said.

Meanwhile, politics over the titles of government schemes is already being played out in Uttar Pradesh.
Last month, the Yogi Adityanath regime decided to remove the “Samajwadi” prefix from all projects initiated by the previous regime.
The chief minister asked officials to submit a list of all state government schemes with the erstwhile government’s tag before the cabinet. The word “Samajwadi” will be replaced with “mukhya mantri”, sources said.
Government school students in the state will also get a smarter red-and-brown uniform, replacing the old khaki attire that had been in use for the last five years. While boys will wear brown trousers and a red shirt with a brown collar, younger girls will sport a brown skirt and a red top with a brown collar.
