Little did Lucknowite Rhythm Sri, 6, knew that some lines he sang to draw his mother’s attention, who was upset with him, would become so popular that within seven days of posting a video online on YouTube and FB page of rhythamit- it garnered 1.3 million views, 800+ comments, 6K shares, 46K likes.
What’s more, the video- ‘Tere Binaa O Maa’- is directed by Ritam Srivastava, another Lucknowite, who has been associated with film maker Prakash Jha and has assisted him for films like Raajneeti, Satyagraha, Jai Gangajal and more.
Explaining how the song happened the six-year-old boy says, “My mother was upset with me and I wanted her to listen to me. So I just sang a few lines and then sang it again for my father in the evening. And the rest is history.” At this point his mother Shiksha, former banker and currently a homemaker, chips in: “Tere Binaa O Maa is dedicated to all mothers. When his father and I listened to the song, we thought it had a lot of potential and should be heard by everyone.”
Rhythm’s father Amit Srivastava, a banker and by profession and musician by passion, decided to post the song on social media.
Shiksha explains, “Rhythm had inclination for music since he was four years old. We got him admitted in Taansen Academy, Lucknow where started learning how to play keyboard. Soon his teacher saw that he can sing well too and so we started getting him trained in classical singing. We shifted to Mumbai because his father got transferred but we didn’t stop his training. It was a few months back when he just sang these lines for me that we realized his true potential. The process to conceptualise the song into a video began. We ran from pillar to post and finally got sponsors. We also got in touch with Ritam Srivastava, a director who is from Lucknow, who had earlier worked on various films. He agreed to direct the video for our son and so here we are.”
Ritam was also all praise for the young boy. “Rhythm’s father is a friend and we both are from Lucknow. So when he sought my advice for the song, I suggested him to go for a video instead of an audio. Then Pravesh Mullick, who has sung for the recently released Bareilly Ki Barfi, came on the board and beautifully composed the song, which we shot in a day with actor Garima Goel and Rhythm playing mother-son with his school Poddar International, Mumbai in the backdrop. It was fun the child is god gifted and was completely effortless. And see our hard work has paid off,” he says with a smile.
Speaking about his future plans Ritam says, “I left Lucknow after completing my masters from Lucknow University in 2006-2007 and started assisting Prakash ji (Jha) and learnt all the film making craft I possess today from him. Of late, I decided to go independent. I also wanted to give something back to the state that has made me what I am today. So currently I’m directing a tentatively titled film ‘Tanashah’ based on dacoits of Chitrakoot. The film is being produced by Sanjay Mullick, who was earlier line producer for films like Bandit Queen. UP Film Council is helping us in the project that is slated for October-November release this year.”
