The BJP has won every election from the constituency since 1989 except once in 2009 when the Congress’s Prem Chand Guddu had defeated the BJP candidate Dr Satyanarayan Jatia.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP’s candidate Prof. Chintamani Malviya defeated his Congress counterpart Premchand Guddu by a margin of 309,663 votes.

In Ujjain - the temple town revered as the land of Shiva and a constituency reserved for the Scheduled Castes - the BJP, shaken by the defeat in the recent assembly elections, had opted to field Anil Firojiya in place of Prof Chintamani Malviya.

The Congress had fielded former state minister Babulal Malviya.
