Songs and selfies light up singer Hans Raj Hans’s campaign stops

Hans Raj Hans, Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate from North West Delhi, swayed voters on Sunday through his popular numbers with improvised lyrics to suit his campaign. People jostled to click selfies with the Punjabi pop and Sufi singer and requested him to sing songs.
Hans is pitted against Congress’s two-time MLA Rajesh Lilothia and Aam Aadmi Party’s Gugan Singh, a former legislator from Bawana.

When the selfies and the song requests were over, Hans — clad in a beige colour kurta and white trousers — insisted that he was not an “outsider” as his opponents were claiming. At several campaign stops on Sunday, the singer told people that he had bought a home in Delhi.
“A rumour is doing the rounds that people of this constituency will have to come to Mumbai to get their works done if I am elected. It is not so. The day I filed my nomination papers, I bought a house in Rohini so I am not going anywhere as I will remain here in the city for all of you. I will fight for your cause with both music and action,” Hans, originally a resident of Jalandhar in Punjab, said.
Hans’s musical campaign revolved around Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as he along with Mehndi sought votes in the PM’s name and sang songs in his praise.
At Defence apartments in Paschim Vihar, Hans started his campaign with a song “Dil Modi Modi Ho Gaya”, an improvised version of his hit song - -Dil Chori Sada ho gaya. The crowd demanded more. In Rohini Sector-3, he struggled to stand on the stage as the crowd pounced upon him to click a selfie.
“This is the biggest disadvantage when a celebrity is given a ticket. Most of the time is finished in welcome and selfies. There is hardly any time left for the interaction. How will he now interact with people and come to know the problems of the area,” Praveen Singh a voter and BJP supporter said. He added that the voting would be conducted in the name of Modi not Hans.
Hans’s motorcade, comprising at least three SUVs, then left for Bhera Enclave in Paschim Vihar where a crowd of over 100 people was waiting for him. “I came here to serve you all on the directions of Prime Minister Modi ji. I am here for clean politics. Support me and vote for me to make Modiji the Prime Minister again,” Hans said.
Among the crowd, not everyone was happy with the celebrity taking over as the politician. “It is strange that a singer from Punjab, who has no Delhi connect, is contesting from here. Hans might manage to get votes in the name of Modi but this is not the right politics,” said Rahul, an engineer, and resident of Bhera Enclave.
