Nearly 76% polling in Jind bypoll; BJP, Congress, INLD factions fight it out
The by-election was necessitated after the death of two-time INLD legislator Hari Chand Middha, whose son is in the fray on BJP ticket.
Around 76% polling was recorded in Jind assembly constituency in Haryana Monday for the high-stakes bypoll, months ahead of the Lok Sabha polls .
The bypoll, necessitated after the death of Indian National Lok Dal MLA Hari Chand Middha, saw a four-cornered contest among BJP, Congress, INLD and the Jannayak Janta Party formed by a breakaway group of INLD and led by Ajay Chautala and his son Dushyant Chautala.
The polling (75.77%) in the constituency was close to the turnout (75.84%) recorded during the state assembly elections in 2014. Of the 1.72 lakh people eligible for voting, 1.3 lakh exercised their franchise and sealed the fate of 21 candidates.
Among the candidates, BJP’s Krishan Middha said: “I am confident to win because the BJP has transformed every sector positively in last four years.”
After casting his vote, INLD’s Umed Singh Redhu also said he was sure of victory. Congress candidate Randeep Surjewala and JJP-backed independent Digvijay Chautala, visited several booths to inspect the scenario.
The polling was by and large peaceful with only a few skirmishes between party workers at some parts. The counting will be held on Thursday.
