‘Lok Sabha has turned into Shor Sabha’, says Kangra MP Shanta Kumar
Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Kangra MP Shanta Kumar says he has played his innings and now want someone else to contest from the seat. But the senior BJP leader has left the final decision regarding Lok Sabha elections to the party.
Veteran BJP leader Shanta Kumar fought the 2014 Lok Sabha elections promising to transform Kangra, comprising the four assembly segments of Chamba district. The former Himachal chief minister won the Kangra Lok Sabha constituency, defeating Chaudhary Chander Kumar of the Congress by 1.7 lakh votes. The four-time MP is not keen on contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but has left the decision to the party. Excerpts from his interview to HT:
What were the high points of your five-year term?
During my political career of five decades, I never counted my high points. I just performed relentlessly and dedicated my services to the people of the state. Much has been done and still more is expected, and awaited.
One thing you wished to do as an MP, but couldn’t. Why?
I wanted to wipe off the tears from the eyes of crores of our brethren living below the poverty line, who can’t afford even a single meal. I tried my best but a lot needs to be done. I am committed to the Antyodaya and Daridra Narayan philosophy of the saint of modern India, Swami Vivekanand.
Would you like to contest again? Why should people re-elect you?
I have played my innings and now want someone else to contest from Kangra. I have conveyed my feelings to the party high command. It is now up to the party and not me on whether I should or shouldn’t contest. I will do whatever the party says.
How was your experience in Parliament?
During this term, I felt the devaluation of politics. The Lok Sabha has turned into Shor Sabha. It is only during obituary references that members observe silence otherwise they indulge in arguments, disturbing proceedings of the both the Houses of Parliament. It is a bad practice. I joined senior MPs in suggesting to the Speaker to impose no work no pay on members if they disrupt proceedings.
Rivals allege you were a failure inside and outside the House. What do you have to say?
Others are free to say what they feel like. I believe in the philosophy of karma and performed my duties according to my conscience. I am what I am.
