In a strong attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he had managed to bust the myth around the PM’s ‘Mr Clean’ image.
The Congress chief said he was unafraid of Modi, adding while the control of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati rested with the PM, things were different in his case.
“Modi can’t pressure me as I have no history,” Rahul said at a public meeting at Union Inter College grounds in Ramnagar, Barabanki on Wednesday.
Canvassing in favour of party veteran PL Punia’s son Tanuj, who is the Congress candidate from Barabanki reserved constituency, Gandhi accused the prime minister of lying.
“The PM must tell why he lied? Did people receive ₹15 lakh in their accounts as promised? Did you manage to give jobs, create employment? Barely 15 people benefited under Modi rule and nearly ₹55,000 crore got transferred in the accounts of people like Anil Ambani, Neerav Modi and Mehul Choksi. This was made possible by none else than the one with a 56-inch chest,” Gandhi said.
“Modi benefited only 15 people, but I intend to benefit nearly 25 crore poor people in the country,” Gandhi said, adding after consulting economists he came up with the NYAY scheme that seeks to transfer cash in the accounts of the country’s poor.
“Modi often talks about surgical strike but in the truest sense the Congress’s NYAY scheme was actually the real surgical strike against poverty,” he said.
“Modi had spoken of creating 2 crore jobs. I won’t promise 2 crore jobs, but I promise you that within one year of assuming charge we would fill up 22 lakh vacant posts in the government,” he said, adding 10 lakh youths would be provided employment in rural India.
He also said that if Congress came to power at the centre, it would ensure that no farmer would be sent to jail in case they failed to repay loans.
Gandhi also promised a separate budget for farmers if the Congress was voted to power.
