Lok Sabha election 2019: BJP may replace sitting MP in Assam’s Jorhat
Kamakhya Prasad Tasa of the BJP won the seat in 2014 defeating veteran Congressman and six-time MP Bijoy Krisha Hadique by over one lakh votes but may now be replaced.
Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency comprises Jorhat and Sivasagar districts of Assam. Voting is scheduled in teh first phase on April 11.

Handique had beaten Tasa who is an agriculturist in the 2009 Lok Sabah elections for the seat.
The Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency comprises 10 assembly constituencies and has been a Congress bastion. Except in 1984, when Parag Chaliha of the AGP won, it had never gone out of the Congress’s hand until Tasa defeated Congress heavyweight Bijoy Krishna Handique in 2014 .Handique lost due to the anti-incumbency factor which has come back to haunt Tasa this time amid reports that the BJP might replace him with Assam cabinet minister Topon Kumar Gogoi.
. Out of a total population of 1922470, 84.08% is rural and 15.92% is urban population. The Scheduled castes (SC) and Scheduled tribes (ST) ratio is 4.57 and 4.75, respectively out of total population.
The tea industry is a major economic drive of the region which also has many small-scale and cottage industries such as furniture making, bamboo work and packaged food manufacturing and various other economic activities.
