Election Result 2019: Parties in UP’s Salempur have depended on caste equation

Uttar Pradesh’s Salempur parliamentary constituency was one of the seats which the BJP won for the first time in the Lok Sabha election in 2014.

The Salempur Lok Sabha seat was once a Congress bastion but the grand old party’s not been able to hold it even once after 1984. Candidates of the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party and Janata Dal have successfully contested from the Salempur Lok Sabha seat twice each.

The Congress had always fielded Brahmin candidates and other parties have depended on nominees from the Kushwaha community from the seat, which also has a sizeable population of Rajbhars, an Extremely Backward Caste.

There are five assembly constituencies - Bhatpar Rani, Salempur, Belthara Road, Sikanderpur and Bansdih - under the Salempur Lok Sabha seat.

Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, wient to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019.

BJP’s Ravinder Kushwaha is currently ahead of his opponents after initial counting.
